FAQs about the 11+ exam

In this blog post, I answer some questions frequently asked by parents about the 11 plus exam. If you have more questions about the 11+ or would like to find out more about the tuition available from HQ Learning you can get in touch using the link below.

What is the 11+ exam?

The 11+ exam is an entrance test used by grammar schools and select secondary schools to assess students' academic abilities. The test is optional and parents must apply through their local council if they would like their child to sit the exam.

Which subjects are covered in the 11+ exam?

It typically includes sections on verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, maths, and English. In Warwickshire, where HQ Learning is based, GL Assessment produce the test.

Are 11+ exam formats the same across the UK?

No, the format can vary depending on the region and the schools to which you are applying. In Warwickshire, where HQ Learning is based, the exam provider is GL Assessment. The courses and materials provided by HQ Learning are designed to support children taking the GL exam. If you are applying to grammar schools in another county, check which exam board is used.

At what age do children take the 11+ exam?

Children take the 11+ exam when they are in Year 6, typically at 10 or 11 years old. The exam usually takes place in September. You must apply for your child to sit the exam while they are in Year 5.

How can I determine if the 11+ exam is suitable for my child?

Consider your child’s academic strengths, consult with their teachers, and think about the suitability of the grammar school environment for your child's learning and wellbeing. The maths and English components of the exam assess some of the skills that would normally be taught in Year 6. If your child is not currently working at age related expectations or above, they are likely to find the content too challenging.

How can I prepare my child for the 11+ exam?

It is important that children are familiar with the exam format before sitting the exam. The exam format is very different from assessments usually used in primary schools. The exam boards provide familiarisation materials for children to use to prepare for the exam. HQ Learning has a range of options for 11+ preparation, whether you are looking to prepare your child for the exam yourself or if you would like private tuition.
